Another 10K

My last post was about having a few days off exercise, but what I forgot to mention was that I entered the 3M Newton Aycliffe 10K which is on the 17th June (3 days before my birthday!)

I'm gonna have to get back into training, serious training. The race is all on the flat and is supposed to be good for setting personal bests. I would like to approach 50 minutes which looking how I ran the Raby 10K (conservatively) should be achievable.

A few days off

I have had a few days off running and any exercise really. I decided to give my body a bit of a rest, feel hadn't recovered from walking in Scotland, yet was still going out running. Still something wrong with my feet but they are a lot better and I can live with a bit pain for now. They will get a rest in July (sort of).

I now feel totally worn out and shit, for some reason I always feel worse when I've hardly had any exercise or fresh air and I know unless I get out shortly my knees begin to ache. Which is a bit backwards, you'd think they'd hurt more when doing exercise.

Hopefully I will get a run tomorrow before work (no I will), would go tomorrow night but the football is on and I'm getting my shopping delivered between 5 and 7.

I need some exercise I feel so lethargic which again is back to front!!

Good Weekend

For a change I feel like I have done something with the weekend, I put my shed up on Saturday which took a while. The longest part was laying the paving level, so the shed would have a level base.

Yesterday I ran the Raby 10K and achieved my target time. Then after the race Kay came over and we spent hours and hours going through accommodation and stuff for our Canada trip. We haven't booked any more than the original first week in Toronto but we have a more firm intinery for the second and have picked out 3 or 4 hotels in each place. We can now finally see a picture of the room (Rose Suite) we booked in Toronto.
Rose Suite (our room in Toronto)

We still have to book the second week but I think we both know what each other likes now and are thinking along the same lines (I hope). It looks like we have decided to drive the second week, not 100% but the train takes as long as driving for some reason?

Today I had a lie in, which I needed. Then I went to Ikea and Ilva with my parents for a look out. I found a table I liked in Ikea but wasn't sure if the colour would go in my dining room. Then walked over to Ilva and saw several tables I liked, at twice the price and most too big. I did find one the looked perfect, it was a Solid Mango Wood Table at £297. I didn't buy it though, can't afford too.

Raby 10K

Distance: 10K
Time: 58:05

I wrote a quick report for this yesterday with the result, map and heart rate on. I'm not going to add too much extra. The official times and results are up on the website now and they have reported exactly the same time as I recorded on the Forerunner (58:05). Which means I came in 327th out of 415, doesn't sound great. It doesn't matter though, I achieved my target (under 1 hour). Next time I do a 10K, I know what I can achieve. Just to make me feel better I did some calculations :-)

There were 415 runners, 318 of which were club runners (77%). So they all run regularly, I don't so I now feel much better, lol. Seriously though I felt a little uncomfortable at the start with 3 quarters of the field being proper club runners and me stood there like a tit on my own. It didn't matter though, I enjoyed the run and achieved my target and know that I could knock quite a bit off that time.

The run wasn't too bad with 1 long steepish bank (ran twice), not as bad as I sometimes run up to Stanley though. At no point was I really out of breath and legs felt fine. The only problem I had was feeling sick again, I thought I was going to puke a few times but slowed a bit each time. I have come to the conclusion its lack of food and/or drink. I only had a bowl of cereal 3 hours before the race and 1 glass of orange about 90 minutes before. I forgot to take a drink with me for just before the race. I needed a wee at the start, I went when I first got there but by the start I needed the toilet again. Ran needing the wee but didn't really think about it (luckily).

I am looking at doing another 10K next month, probably the 3M Aycliffe 10K.

To analyze the run look at the MotionBased log.

Looking Back Part #3

I haven't wrote the WHW up exactly as had intended but much like the walk itself, its incomplete and maybe that's the way I should leave it?

I will go back and do the entire walk but I think I might do it with a day pack and stay in cheap accommodation. I am already planning it in my mind with how I would break the walk down and where I would stay. I think I will do it at about the same time again next year, unless I win some money, leave work and do it again later this year.

Some of the bits that stick in my mind are the bluebells along so much of the route. nearly standing on a chick in Balmaha just after I had taken a photo. I turned and looked down just as I was about to stand on a fluffy little chick. The Rowardennan Hotel sticks in my mind because it was a nice meal, friendly staff and I didn't want to leave. Looking down Loch Lomand with some people I had been talking to walking up towards me. The view from the front of the Inversnaid Hotel and the train from Crianlarich to Glasgow which was beautiful until we reached Helensburgh.

So I do have some good memories and that's how I want to remember it :-)

What did I learn?

I learnt quite a bit about myself, not sure I entirely understand myself though. I always set myself little challenges (which is no bad thing), but I decided I didn't want the WHW as a challenge, but as something I wanted to enjoy. Which is why I cut it short. I learnt to be sensible and look after myself when your body is trying to tell you something.

Sometimes you really need company, someone to talk to, to share experiences and just be there.

Most of all I suppose I learnt to enjoy myself and not beat myself up over things.

I did learn a lot more than this but they are personal and they are going to stay that way, sorry!

Looking Back Part #2

Its been several days since I wrote the 1st part of my write up on the WHW and that was just about the places I had stopped at.

This time I will add some pictures although I didn't take all that many, I was too busy trying to plod on.

Night Out

I went out in Crook last night with Jay, Kev and Wayper (Jay's mate). A bit later on Wayne and Binyon came down as well. It wasn't a bad night but ended up being hassle late on outside Bar 56, when some bloke was trying to hit Jay. I didn't know whether to laugh at the bloke trying to throw the punches because it was like comedy hour. They were so feeble it was funny.

There was a huge crowd of people getting in the way, Jay didn't fight and when the bloke heard the full story about the reason he was angry at Jay, he soon calmed down. It was all to do with some lad who pulled a knife on Jay's brother Aaron a couple of months ago. Another time I was out Jay and another of his mates had words with the lad but didn't actually hit him or anything. From what I gather the lad kept saying Jay was going to hit him and was threatening him and stuff but that doesn't sound like Jay at all. Although he did keep pointing him out everytime we saw him.

Anyway the lads parents turned up at the end of all this, he is only about 17 or something. I think its all sorted out now. God I know why I hate going out now, you go out for a quiet drink and there is nothing but hassle.

I ended up talking to Laura at one point in Bar 56 and she actually bought me a drink, she was mortal like so that must of been why. I was talking to another lass in Bar 56 and then again in the pizza shop at the end of the night. She was really nice, was single, had 2 kids though. I asked her for her number but didn't get it, but at least I actually asked for a change. She said she liked someone she could stand up for and I guess look after and I wasn't like that. Think that's what she said anyway.

Everything is Illuminated

Everything is Illuminated: This is a strange film and I found often quite hard to understand. I'm not sure if there was supposed to be subtitles at times or not (I didn't have any). So a lot of the time I was left guessing what was being said.

Its about a jewish man who goes to the Ukraine in search of his family history. Its certainly not an action film and is very slow but there are some funny parts and the English translator is excellent :-)

I gave it 6 out of 10.

Hungover Run

Distance: 1.88 miles
Time: 19 minutes

I went out for a run today because I needed to do something. Although I really just felt like lying on the couch, but with only a week today until I run the Raby 10k. I had to make sure my feet were going to be OK.

It was really hard running not because of my feet but because of the hangover, even though it was tea time I was running. I was trying to go very easy but I still ended up doing more or less all the run in Zone 5 heart rate or above. I'm not sure if this is because I'm not exactly a 100% or just because I constantly run too hard but I don't think that's the case.

Rocky Balboa

Rocky Balboa: I watched this last night, another film I have wanted to see since I first heard it announced what feels like years ago. Yet for some reason its taken me until now to watch it.

It's very much what I was expecting which is a good thing. Balboa comes out of retirement to fight the champion after a computer generated fight shows he would win.

Well worth watching whether you're a fan of Rocky or not. This one got an 8 out of 10 from me.

Snakes On A Plane

Snakes On A Plane: I watched this on Wednesday night and wasn't sure what I was gonna make of it after hearing differing views.

If you take it for what it is, an action movie with a ludicrous story it's really good and should keep your attention for the entire movie nicely.

I enjoyed it because I wanted a movie I didn't need to think too hard about, which is what this is.

I have it 7 out of 10.

New Drive

I've just ordered an external 320GB drive to add to my server. This is a necessity because I haven't got enough storage to finish adding all my DVDs to my server as XVID files. Once this is done I can put all the DVDs in a box and can stick them in the attic out of the way.

I have spent quite a while today tidying up or trying to. I have so many unfinished jobs still to do and converting the movies was one of them. I've had piles of DVDs stacked on my living room computer since last year and a huge box full in the spare room.

Anyway the drive was £58.98 + shipping and should be here by the beginning of next week. I will set away encoding some of my movies ready to move them to the new drive :-)

The reason for encoding the DVDs as XVIDs is so I can access any of my films from either my living room or bedroom just by using my Xbox. No need to look for a DVD or try to figure out what its about. Its all done on the Xbox and as a bonus (well for them), my parents can also watch any of them down the street without ever having to come to my house to borrow the DVD.

Test Run

Distance: 1.57 miles
Time: 14:23

I went out for a run today because I couldn't sit around any longer or my knee would start playing up. My feet still hurt but they weren't too bad over the very short run and carrying nothing other than my skinny ass.

I also couldn't put off testing my Forerunner 305 any longer which came while I was away. It's a lot better than running with my etrex and tells me my heart rate, pace, distance, etc while I'm running.

I found the run very hard because I am full of cold, another reason I decided not to complete the WHW besides for the feet. I had to go out though because I'm running the Raby 10K in just over a week!

The map above is a lot more accurate than the old GPS and I've added a heart rate graph which shows just how hard I was working. I'm above zone 5 and above my max heart rate which should be 194 for a short while at the end. I think this may look slightly worse than normal because of being under the weather.

I will probably go out at the weekend and run by heart rate and try to keep it in zone 3 and 4. Very impressed so far but not exactly an extensive test though!!

Nearly forgot here's a link to this run on 2 of the sites I'm testing:

Widgets

I'm all over my new widgets on the side of this page, In other words I like them :-)

Theres the new Recently Played tracks list that auto updates every 60 seconds and lets you listen to a clip of the song I have just listened to as well as go to the track or artist page on Last FM. It shows a picture of the album as well if you hover your mouse over the song name. How cool is that?

I have added My Playlist. Again this is from Last FM (they just keep putting out quality shit). You can now listen to my entire playlist, although it will play randomly not in the order I created it. My Playlist started off with some meaning from the songs but I have just started putting in songs I really like now.

The other Widget I have changed is the Meebo Rooms, before there was a chat section there which anyone on the blog could chat to me directly if I was logged into Meebo. Now I have altered it to a Meebo Room, where you can chat to me or anyone else who happens to be on my page or in my group. If you load up the full Room you can share videos and stuff!

I have seen tons of other stuff I would like to add but I cant keep adding stuff or it will take all day to load up my blog!

Look Back Part #1

I've decided to write a few things up so I can look back over them for when I do the walk again, completing it next time!

The first thing is the eating/drinking/sleeping establishments I err tested ;-)

Premier Travel Inn - Milngavie:
Much what you would expect from a national hotel chain. It cost £49 for a night and £7.50 for the unlimited breakfast thing. You got a nice enough room with TV, tea making facilities, bath, shower, etc.. Next to the hotel is the Beefeater where your breakfast is served. It's far from the cheapest place to eat/drink but is nice and the staff are friendly. I had a burger (I think) the night I got there and a full English breakfast or should that be scottish. For the price the price the Breakfast was a bit disappointing, I didn't have any cereal which I could of, just the cooked breakfast but with 1 egg, 1 sausage, 2 small rashers of bacon, tomato and a couple of mushrooms £7.50 was incredibly expensive. I should of asked for seconds. I'm sure it was supposed to be unlimited, I never really saw any toast but must of been on the table at the front somewhere?

Cairneach Milk Bar - Outskirts of Drymen:
I stopped here towards the end of the first day, it's a few hundred yards off the West Highland Way just before entering the Garadhban Forest. It's a small wooden building which offers a small selection of food and home cooking. I had a bacon sandwich and a sprite which was very nice after a hard days walking and I don't think it was all that expensive. Although a pint would of been nice, they don't serve alcohol. There are some toilets available around the back of the building where I filled up my hydration system(not with wee, but water).

Rowardennan Hotel
:
I stopped here for lunch after a hard few miles following the road from Balmaha. The staff were very friendly and the bar lady was very nice, she had quite a bit of bother trying to pour me a pint of Kronnenberg. I ordered a burger here (as I did almost everywhere). While it was expensive at I think £7.95 or £6.95 it was very nice and was probably the best of the entire trip. The bar was very welcoming and cozy with a log burning fire, not that it was needed really as it was hot outside. They had 1 large TV at the end of the bar with the Rangers match about to kick off. I had another pint but a Fosters this time, so they wouldn't have the hassle with the Kronnenberg. I eventually forced myself to leave, one of the lads behind the bar asked me if I wanted another I said I better not or I'd be there all day. I wish I had spend the rest of the day there :-)

Inversnaid Hotel:
I arrived here after a very hard day and could hardly walk another step. The walkers entrance was through the back not quite sure why. Must be to keep the walkers from the posh people or something. You walk through a lounge and into a bar. I ordered a pint and asked if they had any rooms, the man looked at me puzzled (he was foreign) but a pretty girl (also foreign) said they were fully booked, my heart sank. I sat down with my pint and looked through my book hoping for something to jump out at me but it was either here or my tent another half-a-mile to the wildcamp spot. The pint didn't go down very quickly!
I got another pint in and asked about food and was shown a takeaway menu, I was thinking more about a proper sit down meal and again asked if there was any rooms at all, didn't care what or how much. The girl said she would go and check, she reappeared and told me to see the girl on reception. I spoke to girl as instructed and she asked what type of room I wanted. I said a single but didn't really care. She said that was good then and said they had a single with a shower. It sounded like heaven to me. The way she was saying it though I had visions of some cupboard. She asked if I wanted an evening meal but said I'd already ordered a takeaway meal :-(
I picked up my takeaway burger and headed for my room and was quite shocked to find it was very nice. A single bed with TV, kettle and a seperate bathroom with shower cubicle, toilet and basin. Far from what I had envisioned and it only cost me £25!
The following morning I left without a breakfast as I wasn't sure if it was included or night. The room was very nice and the whole hotel looked nice with fabulous views so I found out when I left by the front door rather than shuffled through the back. My only problem was it felt like they were trying to keep walkers seperate from other guests otherwise the place would of been fantastic. Oh and there was some communication problems with bar staff because they weren't Scottish but Eastern European I watched as they struggled with almost every customer. They were very pleasant just a slight communication problem.

Beinglas Farm Campsite:
I didn't camp here but stopped here for a pint and another burger but was again very impressed by the establishment. The campsite looked very nice and the wigwams looked inviting, I ordered another burger but doubled the size to 1/2 pound because I was starving and got a pint of cider. It cost an extra £2.50 to double the size which again was expensive. I can't remember if the burger alone cost £9.25 or if that included the cider. The lady brought the burger out to me as I was outside and asked if I didn't like cheese, I looked at it and said I'm afraid I don't. She took it back and made me another. She said they had put it on before she could stop them. The burger was OK but dripping with fat and clearly a factory thing unlike a couple of the previous homemade ones. I was becoming a burger expert, lol. The campsite was very nice and would definitely be worth staying at.

Crianlarich Youth Hotel:
This is the first Youth Hostel I have ever stayed at and was unsure what I would make of it. The man who greeted me was very welcoming and went through everything with me and gave advice on where to eat and gave me a voucher thing that let me get a 2 course meal and pint for £10 at the lodge. He said both pubs were nice but he would personally choose the lodge. The Hostel had a large dining area and a lounge with TV as well as very big kitchen, drying rooms and internet access. The dorm room I was put in had 4 bunk beds. All the bottom ones were taken so I picked a top bunk furthest from the door. The internet access was only 5p a minute, so cheap enough. There was a lady on reception on the morning and she was also very helpful. So in all quite a good experience although the room smelled quite a bit of sweaty socks in the morning but I guess that's to be expected, lol!

Rod & Reel - Crianlarich:
I popped in here as it was the closest pub to the Youth Hostel and though I'd have a look before going over the recommended one. The section near the bar is quite small and there were some locals sat there and 1 walker. I ordered a pint of cider and sat down and looked at the menu, there wasn't much on the menu I fancied. The pub kind of reminded me of the uplands where I used to go years ago. A bit rundown which mainly locals frequent (I think?)

Ben More Lodge - Crianlarich:
This place was quite a bit further from the Youth Hostel than I thought, I had been shown on a hand drawn map where it was and he made it look like it was a few yards from the Rod & Reel but it must of been about half a mile or so from the Youth Hostel which is a fair way when your feet are killing you. I opened the door and straight away it looked more inviting for some reason, not sure why. I ordered a pint and sat down, I heard the lady say that meals weren't being served until 8 for some reason. While I was sat there a man came in and started talking to me saying he recognised me from the hotel in Milngavie and asked how I was getting on. I spent a few minutes talking to him and several more people came in all in the same party. There must of been about 10 of them, some of the others I had recognised from walking through the forest on the 1st day. Anyway I ended up getting a meal before 8 and I chose the soup which was Tomato and basil which was very nice and chicken breast again this was very nice and I asked for a pint of lemonade. I'd already drank 3 pints over the 2 pubs. A guy came in who was the musical entertainment which I had to move for because I was sat where he needed to setup. I left before he started so not sure if he was any good. One of the nice things about this place is you can sign the wall and leave messages, I didn't though. This is again somewhere I would happily go back to.

Burger King - Glasgow Central:
I have only added this in because I bought a whopper as I was rushing to get my train to Newcastle. I have never eaten burgers from McDonalds or Burger King before because of all the stuff they add in but this was one of the few things I could see was already done on the shelf thing behind and I was starving. It actually wasn't too bad considering it had mayonnaise and god knows what else in.

on train out of glasgow

i am now on my second train from glasgow to Newcastle. the first was a
nice journey with beautiful views some of which i would of seen if you
i hadn't been staring at my feet trying to keep going. i always say
you should look up and around you otherwise you might as well just go
on a treadmill. but when its hard you tend to stair at your feet
concentrating on each step.

anyway at least i got to see some of the views, i will be back to do
the west highland way again but finish it and enjoy it.

although i may of been in pain for most of the last 3 days it has
still been worth it. totally by random heather small singing proud has
just come on my mp3 player. not sure proud is the correct word but i'm
pleased i made the decision to come home early and not suffer on to
the end. yes i would of then felt proud i made it but what would my
memories of been, PAIN.

i had a big smile on my face on the last train, not quite sure why.
maybe it was the fantastic views it wasn't because it was over.
probably looked like someone high on drugs or something.

i hadn't realised the stations in glasgow were quite that far apart
when rushing from one to the other, picked up my tickets and grabbed a
whopper from burger king as they were ready. don't really like half
the stuff in it but i was hungry.

oh i forgot before i left i spoke to a bloke in his sixties i would
guess. who i had seen on day 1 and was staying in my dorm in the youth
hostel. i told him i was going home. he said he had exactly the same
problem last year and gave up at the same point. i had seen him
attending to his feet the 1st day. i was pleased that someone else had
done exactly the same and knew what it was like. happy he came back to
do it again.

last night a bloke stopped and asked how i was getting on. he said he
recognised me from the hotel before i set off in milngavie and had
seen me camping the 1st night. he pointed me out to one of the others
to see if he recognised me, he did. they were in a group of about 10
doing it. i recognised a couple of the others mainly because 2 of the
short blokes were very noisey and that stuck in my mind when i had
been following them.

to be honest that was more like what i was hoping for, talking to
people doing the same thing but i guess i hadn't been that sociable
the first 2 days, too busy just trying to keep going.

suppose i should stop rambling on and jumping about from subject to subject.

Going Home

I am coming home today, I stayed the night in the Youth Hostel in Crianlarich. My feet are absolutely killing me and realised why. My shoes just don't have enough cushioning, some of the cushioning of this show were actually in the insoles which I have to take out to put my insoles which don't have quite so much.

If I had stuck with my normal walking shoes I probably would of been fine but we live and learn I guess.

I'm OK about going home, not beating myself up or anything. I could always come and complete the walk from here or do the whole thing from the start with the knowledge I have gained.

I have learnt quite a lot about myself suprisingly from this. Yesterday when I was talking to a couple from Stockton again. They said we might get a bus from Crianlarich to Tyndrum saving them 5 miles. It went through my head "That's cheating". Then I thought don't be stupid its a walk not a competition and that is sort of when I decided that I am supposed to be doing this for enjoyment not some sort of test. I have nothing to prove to myself!

My train leaves at 9:35 for Glasgow then I got my dad to book the ticket from there to Durham. So I just have to pick it up from the Ticket Office. I get into Newcastle at about 2:33, then the train to Durham leaves at 2:40. So by about 3:45 I should be at home :-)

day 2

today was long and very hard. after my last post which i might of sent
twice. i had another 7 miles to walk and basically it was too much. i
have never felt so bad walking, in agony with my feet.

i got talking to a couple from stockton for a few miles, that helped
and took my mind off how i was feeling. they stopped and i carried on
for a bit, from this point on it got harder and harder. the last 3
miles took me ages and i just wanted out of here and to go home. i
eventually got to inversnaid and had decided i was gonna get a room in
the hotel and go home tomorrow if i could.

i got a pint and asked the girl about a room but she said they were
fully booked. i really didn't want to spend the night in the tent as
it had been raining for 2 hours and i wanted to properly attend to my
feet.

i ordered some food and asked again if they had any room at all, i
didn't care if i had to pay more. she went off and came back and told
me to go to the reception. she said what room did i want i said a
single but didn't really care.

i ended up with a single room with a shower, a bath would of been nice
as i had trouble even standing in the shower. the room only cost me
£25. i would of easily paid £150 if i had too.

as i just wrote by now i was having problems just standing. i forced
myself to stand there in the shower, where i noticed i have a lump on
my hip, at the top of the pelvis where you can normally see the bone.
What's normally a little bump is about twice its usual size.

i really wanted to give up when i got here and still may have too, if
i feel anywhere near like i do now there is no way i could carry on
all the way to the end. the problem i have is i have to walk to
crianlarich to get a train or bus. which is where i was going to
tomorrow night anyway, a youth hostel awaits me.

tomorrow is shorter than the last 2 days, thank god at 13 miles. today
must of been about 18. there is 1 other place i could probably get a
bus from and that's invernan. but It's not an official stop and you
have to flag a citylink bus down which would get me to glasgow.

i'm really not sure what to do. i felt so bad today though that i
wanted to cry but what's the point in that it wasn't going to help.
this is supposed to be a holiday and i'm supposed to be enjoying it
but due to the feet it's turning into a nightmare.

i am going to get some sleep and lie in and will see how my feet shape
up tomorrow i have a 13 mile walk one way or another. It's the half
way point as well at crianlarich!

stopped for dinner

i am at Rowardenan hotel funny enough in Rowardenan. i have ordered a
ben lomand burger as i'm at the foot of ben lomand. actually its
because its the only thing under £10 i fancy. I've alreay drank a
lemonade and now have a kronenberg in front of me. this is a nice
place and could happily stay here all day but i have another 7 miles
to go after here to inversnaid well about half a mile after it but
there is another pub there i should be able to get something and a
pint. well That's it for now...

vantage point

i am sat on top of conic hill looking up loch lomand, It's a fantastic
site but afraid i cant add any pictures until i get home :-(

i was awake from just after 4 am but waited until 5 before stirring. i
had had a capacino however the hell you spell it, eaten a cereal bar
and packed up and away before 6:30. another tent had appeared a bit
further down from me but no sign of the occupants.

my feet are still hurting but so badly. one of the hard parts of the
day will be coming down off this hill. i think it might hurt a bit.
what the hell i'm carrying on anyway...

day 1

i have arrived at my wildcamp site and am laid in my tent trying to
relax. today was very hard and far from enjoyable. the walking was all
on hard packed track or roads there was an especially bad section from
gartness to drymen.

i spoke to a friend just before i started to walk into the forest and
she said it had been horrible weather at home. it had just been cloudy
here with no rain. about 10 minutes after i came off the phone it
started to drizzle and has done ever since. i brought my old phone and
put my sim in it, for some reason everything works except sending
texts. why can i ring but not text?

the last few miles have been very hard, my feet are killing me.
stopped a couple of miles before here and had a look at my right foot.
the heal was really sore but i couldn't find a blister then i pressed
the skin and realised the entire heal is 1 huge blister, its about 3
inches long and 2 wide. the blister i'm on about!

I really felt like giving up and was thinking about struggling to
balmaha and going home but its a couple of miles yet. i almost had a
tear in my eye at the thought of having to give up after 1 day.

i struggled on to this planned spot which wasn't helped by a diversion
that added a bit extra to the walk. i rang my dad to let him know i
had arrived here and told him how i felt. he tried to encourage me,
which maybe worked a bit. i feel better now i'm laid down and have
popped the blisters and stuck a huge blister plaster over the worst
one.

i will see what i feel like in the morning. when i get out my tent i
can see a nice view of loch lomand hopefully that will inspire me in
the morning :-)

It's a shame this is such a negative post because i so wanted to enjoy
today. someone did warn me when i was on the top of great gable that
the first 2 days weren't good but after that It's much better.

i'm hoping i can find a pub at about dinner time tomorrow and have a
meal and 2 drink. today i stopped in the milk bar just outside drymen
and had a bacon roll. if i can do that each day it will be good. i'm
gonna put the stove on soon and have some food and a drink. i can hear
my stomach rumbling!

i might post again a bit later on, it gives me something to do!

as i'm scotland

my burger was very nice!

i was stood at the bar thinking i will have either a pint of lager or
a magners. i decided while i was stood there that as i was in scotland
i would have a whiskey and an iron bru, the numpty asked if i wanted
it in the same glass. the whiskey was only a bells they didn't have
any local ones :-(

the whiskey was my last alcohol for the night or i will be hung over
tomorrow. quite a few in here now but think i will go back to my room
soon or i will end up getting another pint in!

i'm here

i am at milngavie, the start of the west highland way. i am checked in
the hotel and have been for a walk into the town centre to the start
point. called in boots and bought a contact lense case, i knew i had
forgot something. i have some disposables but not enough for the
entire trip so had to bring my normal ones as well.

i called in a pub in the town and had a pint but looked like they
weren't serving meals all the stuff was put away. i suppose it is
friday night. i have come back to bring the beefeater next to my hotel
and am waiting for my burger to turn up. i am on my second pint of the
day and can feel it, That's that only cereal does for you. food has
just turned up so gotta go ...

trains

why don't train stations have big doors that open when trains are
coming in and out then they might not be so cold!

WHW

I forgot to say I will probably do a few posts from the route as long as I can get a signal. I'm taking my old phone, the battery lasts longer and I have a spare for it.

Then again I might decide to "go dark" for once in my life and not access anything (likely??)

Eve of Holiday

Tomorrow I will be setting off for Milngavie on the train if they are running on time after a derailment today. To be honest I have mixed feelings, I'm not exactly looking forward to it yet because I've not had time to really think about it. I've spent all day listening to everyones problems and rushing around.

I suppose it will be good to get away from everything (I should be saying it will be good). I just can't get into holiday mode yet. Finished packing my bag about 10 minutes ago, it doesn't feel too bad. Although this time I've spent a bit of time adjusting everything. There is also the slight omission of water so far, I don't need that filling up until Saturday morning when I leave the hotel I'm staying in. 3 to 4 litres of water adds quite a bit of weight to the pack!

In some ways I'm slightly nervous or I know I will be once I get to bed tonight. I have only had 1 night in the tent so far and I'm not sure I will like Youth Hostels but its an experience which is what it's all about.

I haven't over stocked on food, I do have enough Cereal bars to last me several days. I have got 3 Wayfarer meals, 4 cup-a-soups, 5 peperamis, supanoodles and a few other things. This may not sound like a lot considering I will be away for 8 nights but I will be staying in hotels 2 of those night (beginning and end), 2 Youth Hostels (although need own food) and I will be stopping in any pubs for meals when I pass them when I'm hungry. Of course I will be sampling a few local ales while in those pubs ;-)

Smashed Dinner Run Time

Distance: 3.15 miles
Time: 29:34

Today I smashed the time for the regular dinner time run. Mandy and Helen went out at 12 and didn't really mention they were going until they turned upstairs with their gear on. I got caught up doing work, so decided I would go on my own a bit later.

I wasn't sure whether to go or not, being bit worried about my knee with the WHW days away. I went out anyway and set off at a fair pace. When I got to the Police HQ a couple of blokes ended up behind me so kept the same pace I'd ran down the bank. I kept this up all the way to crossing over the railway line, when I slowed to let them pass.

I struggled a bit past Crook Hall and could feel myself getting really hungry and thirsty (it was hot). I kept going and walked up the steps to the road. Then ran up the bank to the turn in for the DLI, just before the turn in I walked about 20 yards (struggling from the early pace). I ran the next lot and decided I needed to walk just before the football pitches. Then again I set off and ran all the way to the overflow car park but once I reached the car park I thought I was gonna be sick. So had to walk for 20/30 yards till the feeling passed. Then I realised the time and sprinted the last few hundred meters back to the door.

I beat the previous best time my 5 minutes, I know I could knock even more off that if I'd been properly hydrated and had eaten a snack an hour before. I had no fuel near the end, not exactly the wall on a 5K, lol but it felt like it.

I wanna, I gotta, I need to..

...Run the Las Vegas Half Marathon.

I saw this mentioned in an advertisement in Runners World, they wanted £1200 for 4 nights in Mandalay Bay. I'm sure I could do it for 5 nights at a lot less money than that, this would be absolutely fantastic, running along the Las Vegas Strip being set off by fireworks and Elvis "Viva Las Vegas".

Before I even saw this race I had said that I really wanted to go to Vegas in December. I can't really afford it but it would be absolutely fantastic. I wonder if Kay fancies Vegas, the Half Marathon would only take up 2 hours of the 4/5 nights/days.

It sets off at 6am (what the hell), suppose its the only way they can let you run the strip by doing it early.

The Marathon would be great but not ready for that, but the Half.

I gotta do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Run logging

I have been testing out a couple of logging sites for my runs. I originally tried MotionBased over a year ago and I'm giving it another go now, mapmyrun is also looking better after a recent update. There is also a sister site mapmyride but is very new and just appears to have the same data as the run site.

A free offline program I've just started trying is SportTracks, which shows the route on Google Maps along with various stats like Calories burnt, pace, etc...

Homemade Burgers

I decided a while ago that I would try making my own burgers after seeing the amount of fat oozing out of shop bought ones, they always tasted crap as well. I found a recipe on Tescos Recipe site and bought the ingredients the other day.

I finally got around to making them tonight, I halved the contents because there was no way I was gonna eat 10 burgers. I didn't eat 5 either, I gave 2 to my parents and the third one I ate was only little. Although I do feel stuffed now.

They tasted very nice and actually did look like the picture above.
